5 Best Restaurants in Galway Ireland

Walking the streets of Galway to find some of the best dining spots

Growing up, I somehow believed that Irish cuisine was... well, nothing to write home about. But on our recent trip to Galway, that myth was completely shattered! My family and I were blown away by the quality, freshness, and flavors this charming city had to offer.

Here are my top 5 must-visit restaurants in Galway:

1. John Keogh’s
We kicked off our trip with Thanksgiving dinner here, and while I do love a traditional turkey feast, I can’t say we missed it. Dinner was incredible! This quaint restaurant offers delicious food and warm, welcoming staff. Pro tip: Reserve a table in the back main room for the best experience.

2. The King’s Head
We stopped here for lunch on our first full day. There’s often a wait for the side restaurant, but trust me—it’s worth it! Put your name in and grab a pint in the spacious pub area while you wait. If you’re lucky, you might even catch some live music. The portions are generous, and they offer a fantastic kids' menu (for those ready to venture beyond nuggets and fries!).

3. Moran’s on the Weir
This was hands down my absolute favorite spot from the trip. Think fresh, local oysters, mussels, and the most incredible seafood served in a cozy thatched cottage setting. It’s the perfect blend of rustic charm and unforgettable flavors

4. Éan
We stumbled upon Éan after seeing a long line at Ard Bia (next time for sure!) and were so glad we did. Every dish was delicious! Heads up—their baked goods sell out fast. If you spot a pastry you want, grab it early. I learned the hard way after waiting until the end of brunch to pick out a sweet treat for my daughter—and missed out!

5. Rouge
This cozy wine bar was so good, my family went twice! While they do serve a full French menu, we came for wine and dessert. The staff seated us at a charming table near the piano, and the entire evening felt magical. The staff was incredibly friendly, adding to the wonderful experience.

Best Spots for the Perfect Pint

The Dail Bar
We walked past this spot in the evening and it was PACKED! But if you visit during the late afternoon, you'll have plenty of room to relax and unwind.

Tigh Neachtain
Although I still can’t pronounce the name correctly, this pub was high on my list to visit—and it didn’t disappoint! With cozy nooks and charming corners throughout, it’s the perfect place to sit back, sip a pint, and soak in Galway's character. On the weekend go during the afternoon to avoid the crowds!

Best Spots for live Trad Music

best traditional music in Galway. Musicians play on stage with a violin and guitar.

Musicians playing traditional music at The Quays Bar

The Quays Bar

Make sure to take a picture with The Galway Girl seated statue before the entrance! Came here to listen to some traditional Irish music. When we arrived seating was limited, but there’s a small room to the left right after the bar where you can watch the musicians play while you enjoy a pint! My little one and family all enjoyed stopping here before dinner.
