A Disney Cruise – Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Boarding the ship at Port Canaveral

Thinking about taking a Disney Cruise with your little one? As a single mom, I wanted a vacation that was fun for my 5-year-old daughter but also easy for me. After experiencing a Disney Cruise firsthand, I can confidently say—it’s a magical, stress-free way to travel with kids! But there are a few things I wish I had known before we set sail. Here’s everything you need to know to make your Disney Cruise with a young child smooth and enjoyable.

Choosing the Right Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line offers several ships and itineraries, but not all are the same. Here’s what I found helpful when choosing the right one for us:

  • Pick the right length – This was my first ever cruise and I opted for 5 nights, which worked perfectly for our needs! I feel like 4 nights could have also worked, but that 3 nights would not have been enough time for us to explore all the ship has to offer.

  • Choose a family-friendly stateroom – If your budget allows, a room with a veranda (balcony) is great for fresh air and extra space. But even the inside cabins are well-designed with plenty of storage.

I was initially nervous about having a veranda with a little one, but after living it, I felt safer than expected. The door has 2 safety locks - one being the door handle itself, and one located way out of any little one’s reach towards the top of the door. In addition, the door is a sliding door which makes it a bit more challenging for any little hands to open. Also, the veranda itself is lined with acrylic walls.

  • Look for itineraries that include one of Disney’s private islands – and if possible, do one that goes to both! Not only does it save on expenses (food, beverages, & ice cream are all included!) but they also offer amazing experiences with Minnie, Mickey and friends!

Packing Tips for a Disney Cruise with a Young Child

Packing for a cruise is different from packing for a regular vacation. Here are a few must-haves:

Princess or pirate costumes – Disney Cruises have themed nights like Pirate Night, and dressing up makes it extra fun. I brought a princess dress for each night we were onboard! My little one was beyond excited to get dressed up each night.
Refillable water bottle – While drinks are included, having your own bottle makes it easier to stay hydrated.
Magnetic hooks – Cruise cabin walls are metal! Hooks help keep things organized.
Small toys or activities – For downtime in the cabin or waiting at dinner. Run to the dollar store before leaving and pick up a few Disney themed toys to have on hand.
What I didn’t need – Too many fancy outfits! Casual dresses are totally fine for most of the cruise.

Magically running into Cinderella while dressed just like her!

Embarkation Day Tips

The first day can be a little chaotic, but here’s how to make it smoother:

  • Check in online ASAP – This helps you snag an earlier boarding time.

  • Pack a carry-on bag – Your luggage might not arrive at your room until later, so pack swimsuits, snacks, and anything your child might need.

  • Explore the ship early – Walk around and find the kids' play areas, pools, and dining spots before it gets too busy.

What I Wish Was Different: Kids’ Club for Reserved or Shy Kids

One of the biggest perks of a Disney Cruise is the Oceaneer Club—an amazing kids’ space with themed rooms, character visits, and interactive activities. But, if you have a reserved or shy child (like mine!), the club can feel a little overwhelming.

I wish there were more gentle, small-group introductions or activities designed for kids who need a little extra time to warm up. The staff is great about encouraging kids, but I found that my daughter needed more one-on-one attention or quieter activities to feel comfortable. If your child is on the shy side, try visiting during open house hours first so they can explore with you before being left on their own. Also, this is your only time to take any photos of the kids club as adults are only allowed to visit during the open house on the first day.

Final Tips for a Stress-Free Cruise

Take advantage of the kids' club—but on your child’s terms – If your little one isn’t ready to be dropped off, that’s okay! For activities like Princess Story Time, I stood outside the club where she could see me. Was it my favorite thing to do? No, but it made her feel more comfortable and allowed her to experience the magic! If they really don’t want to go, there are plenty of other family activities onboard.
Don’t try to do everything – There’s SO much to do, but pick a few must-dos each day and leave time to relax.
Use the Disney Cruise Navigator app – This helps keep track of schedules, showtimes, and dinner reservations. Make sure to “Like” (heart) any activity you may be interested in. Once you do, you’ll see it in the Your Plans section.

A Disney Cruise is one of the best vacations for families, and as a single mom, I felt completely at ease knowing everything was designed for kids and parents alike. It was a trip filled with magical moments, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
